Tax-Exempt Option

Post Tax-Exempt Option
Hi,

I sell music to schools, churches, and the like, all of whom are typically tax-exempt. I live in Minnesota, so if a school in MN buys music from me and is tax-exempt, I need to "turn-off" the tax for MN sales.

How can I do this?

Thanks!

hell-o
do you sell to taxable clients too?
generally schools and churches and other organizations are not impluse buyers. futher, they will generally have a purchase order to accompany the purchase...a pre-authorization. there is a hack in the lifer's group that allows for the input of a name or number or alphnumeric indentifier which will enable a discount for anyone entering that identifier code. you could use that to offset the tax with a purchase order number or their tax exempt number for future purchases.

i am not aware of any other solution for tax exemption based on an individual unknown customer. too, you will need their tax exemption number for your records.
so it sounds like at least the customer should make prior arraingements or that you will have to refund the tax for first time buyers then follow up for their number.
it maybe possible that when any number matches the code in the discount array that tax is not computed. this will take some additional coding. otherwise just inform them that the tax cost display is a matter of routine and the tax will be offset by an equal discount. it also will not be reported as a tax.

yes it can be done but will take some hacking to make it flow properly and some preplanning as well.
regards,
dan

How I handle it is that In the shipto state selection drop-down, I put an option, like, "MNtaxexempt".
I also add a message to the form about the tax exempt status and to support it they need to submit a completed certificate. Then, I provide a link to the .pdf tax exempt certificate for them to complete and either email it to me, print, complete, and fax or mail to me.

If they do not provide a tax exempt cert, and they selected the "MNtaxexempt", I add the tax back in and charge them that amount. Of course, I use the Offline gateway, so it makes it easier to add the tax back in and charge the full taxed amount.

HTH!
