CSS Layout vs. Tables...

Post CSS Layout vs. Tables...
I'd like to use CSS to layout the basic page formats. I envision a div container for the entire page, a div container for the header, left-side nav, and footer. I suppose I'll keep the dynamic generated information (ie product page, shopping cart, etc.) wrapped in another div container, but leave the table formatting that's generated by AgoraCart alone.

Any suggestions on how to do this effectively within the spirit of the AgoraCart framework? Any issues to be aware of besides CSS browser issues? I really like the level of formatting control afforded by CSS and would like to apply that to the site design. I'm used to using CSS, but not AgoraCart.

Thanks for the assistance. Once I get something up to show, I'll send you a link.

i understand the new version coming out will be more css friendly. whether or not it will be tabless capable i do not know. however, i doubt it very much. tabless dynamic content is kinda crazy to wrap one's brain around and probably not the best idea for general distribution.
you can, as you know, duplicate a tabless page pretty well with tables and vise versa. i've had to integrate several carts to a tabless css design. it turned out pretty good but took some gray matter.
so i guess you'll have to marry the two formats as best you can for now while in the store.
you'll want to make use of the standard head and body strings in the freeform logic and don't forget to hardcode css and body tag into the html files you'll be using.

Thank you for the information. Based on your information and from what I've experienced with those ever so fragile (yet powerful) tables, I decided to leave them alone and simply use CSS for selective formatting. Previous tips about putting a reference to the CSS link in the 2nd section of the Free Form Logic Manager were very helpful as well.

Here is what I'm working on for a client who's running a coffee roasting / distribution business:

The site will change daily over the next month, so depending upon when you view it - things may look radically different! As I write this, the next step is to lock down the shopping flow and clean up some of the generated HTML with the styles so they fit better into the overall design.

store looks good. there are other places you can add css such as the:
agora.setup.db
agora_html_lib.pl
agora_order_lib.pl
agora.cgi
files. some of the functions can be a little tough to run down but they are there and if done correctly classes, styles and such can be inserted.
the 5.0 version coming out will allow for much deeper addition of css control so that will be cool.
if you have probs finding anything just post.

this has been one of my big frustrations fer several years. not necessarily the lack of CSS but the ability to change teh layout was lacking at some levels due to it being built into the code.

Well we've already corrected this in version 5.0.0 ... and it took months of work to fix. we are still working on converting some of the payment gateways, but she's almost done. Eric has been teh force behind this change. So don't spend a lot of time changing this in yer current cart.

5.0 has been completely overhauled as far as html goes... most of the html code is generated from templates files. There is still some room for improvement by pulling more html code out of the cgi files but that's a project for down the road. Right now the html still has tables but should be easily converted into a mostly tabless design. 5.0 does have a great css file controlling most of the look and feel of the site but the layout is done with the html in the tables.

Hope that makes sense to ya....

I did start a completely tableless version of agoracart but it's something that's been put on the back burner for now. I think it's a bit too complex for more users of the cart.

well we'll try the xhtml version out next summer or when the AgoraSQL development is in full swing the coming months. but as an option, if it can be done. I'd like to see if we can also become mobile device compliant and setup a portal /shopping mall for such activities... shopping by phone on the internet Wink

Mister Ed... of course .. of course
PS, yes we have a mySQL version, but it's not ready yet Smile

that's the power of xhtml... you have it use a particular style sheet for mobile devices and it changes the look of the site so it works there.... Of course the xhtml design has to be completely tableless but it can be done.
