 web hosts?
I was wondering who everybody uses for a host. Who is the best and worst? I am using agoracart and my host keeps messing up my cart, I need to switch...any opinions?
Thanks

I use ipowerweb right now and would NOT recommend them. I just set up 2 new domains with MrEd at http://www.propellerheadhosting.com an so far I am VERY happy with the service and the package I purchased. And you know the cart will work well on it. ;)

also, at agoracart.com we list ASP partners (Authorized Service Providers) fer hosting. I'll be adding more to the list once I find folks to redesign the site :)

Howdy,
just an update to this thread...
a new site was released. I'm moving ASPP hosting partners over to this new web hosting and webmaster resources site. It is WebsiteHostGuide.com
http://www.WebsiteHostGuide.com
So, if you do graphic design, web hosting, merchant accounts, web development, programming, etc, then please list your site.
Free listings are available as well.
Thanks,
Mister Ed ... of course ... of course

 Hosting Services
Stay far, far away from GoDaddy. We were with Earthlink, switched because it was so expensive and their help desk is helpless. GoDaddy was cheaper, but even worse (I could never get a simple form to work, and they were clueless as to what was wrong).
We switched to www.nikira.com
The forms work.
Their automated AgoraCart installation worked.
Their responses to my requests for help are wonderful, in perfect English, and helpful.
Now, if I can just figure out how to set up my store on AgoraCart . . .

I've been doing some consulting work for a client that uses iPowerWeb and I find having to do everything through control panel and FTP pretty cumbersome - give me that command prompt anyday!
I'm pretty satisfied with http://www.dreamhost.com/ - I like their control panel, but certain changes (like adding a mailbox) sometimes take up to an hour since they seem to do them in a batch mode. Compare Dreamhost plans here, but 2560MB storage, 64GB xfer/mo.,
15 domains, email accounts galore for $19.95/mo. is a good deal to me.
They provide shell access, i.e. 'command line' access for their Unix hosting - I'd never use a hosting provider that didn't provide shell access!!.

Howdy,
many hosting folks are not setting up shell access by default since it's become very dangerous to do so with all the cyber crime going on. Others will offer it upon request. yet others will only do it if they "know" you or do a background check of some sort.
I don't grant it immediately to just anyone. I personally only grant it to folks I have seen a lot in the AgoraCart forums or I feel the client has integrity and knowledge of how to use the tools. If they don't, I will do those services for them.
but yer right ... shell/command line is much better. All those pretty icons and links only get in the way and numb the brain :)

 RE: shell access
hell-o
shell access was offered by ipower until some script kiddies got in there and started accessing other server hosted domains through it. brough their servers down and caused a lot of headaches. they have since changed ownership of certain files and folders on some machines to help prevent further damage from information gleaned by these criminals.
the old days are gone. i would be hesitant to have my domain hosted with such a vulnerability. yep, all the cool tools have now been turned against us.
regards,
dan
