Post Change product page by category
I am using the default product page layout(2 across). Here is what I would like to do...........

I would like to change the number of columns displayed to the four column setup(or a different one) for specific categories. I would also like to add category specific instructions to the top of the product cart display relating to that category. Many of my categories have identical items, but different styles. The product description could be posted above each listed page of that category, thus saving decreasing database load.

I do not want to change the actual header appearance, just the cart layout.
Version 5.2.005 Preegle.com.

Tell me if my thinking is right. Since this is an HTML database, duplicating the exact description unnecessarily several hundred times could slow down the site? No? Or am I whistling in the wind?

Don,
v5.2 has the capability to use category specific custom headers and category specific ppinc files.
They use the the following naming conventions:
Header: header-categoryName.inc
product Page: categoryName.inc

I have found that it is best not to have any other characters besides alphanumeric and no spaces in the category names when using custom headers & ppinc files.

Hi Bonnie,

I didn't know you could create custom ppinc pages. That helps!

Got another issue now.

I tried inserting descriptive text for the category at the top of the ppinc file.

The page works but the descriptive text repeats above the products 6 times, which is also the number of products displayed.

Where do I need to put the text so it only displays once at the top? I'm using the default productpage.inc.

Also, how many products can you have in the database before you see noticible changes in loading?

Thanks!

Yep, That's why you use a custom header...
You don't have the multiplication of the text when you use the custom header...

I don't know how many products...
I know of some people who have thousands of products in their database...

OK, we're almost there................

I want to create a custom header inc file that duplicates the default header but adds some text.

It would seem that there should be a default header inc file that I could copy, make the additions, and then rename it to my category name - problem solved?

Where is the default header inc file ?

Have you customized the AgoraCart template or are you
using one of the default ones that came with the install?
If a default one, they are located in the 'html/html-templates/templates/TheAgora' directory.
It is called store_header.html
Make sure that when you save the custom one you place it in the
'html/html-templates' directory and make sure it follows the proper naming convention of:
header-categoryName.inc

Hi Bonnie,

I knew that the store_header.html was the right file for the main page. However, the sample header files in the html templates were very heavily laden with PHP so I didn't think the html and the inc files were "interchangeable".

I'm happy to report that, with your help and patience, I have been able to accomplish my goal.

Thanks for all your help! . . til the next time:)

Don,
Just a correction to your statement...
There is no PHP in AgoraCart. AgoraCart is written in Perl/cgi.
PHP & cgi do not play well together and are different scripting languages.

They are not necessarily "interchangable" because they
do need to follow naming conventions and other things regarding their function.

However, I am pleased to know you were able to edit files to meet your needs.
