* Get a real HTML editor. Don't use any of those junky WYSIWYG
things. They add so much I like to run around all day waving my hands inthe air and screaming: I am Perl Harbor today to your code you can't make heads or
tails of it when they are done with it. HTML is VERY easy and it
doesn't take much time to learn it.
* Ditch the control panel for doing your file management. Get an
FTP program and learn how to use it. You can do all of your
permissions, uploads, downloads...all of it with one slick little
program.
* Get a book on the basics of PERL and CGI programming. Nothing
fancy but something that gives you a little bit of clue as to how to
read it and make minor changes. If you don't know what this
means "#!/usr/local/bin/perl" then you need some serious reading up
before you try to do this cart.
* Learn how to use the search feature of this board and the Yahoo group. There is so much stuff out there that answers 75% or more of the questions posted here. If you won't at least help yourself a little why
should anyone else? Don't be lazy.
* Go to http://www.tucows.com to find yourself some programs to
help you edit your code and transfer your files. SmartFTP is free and works great.
* Grab some Coca-Cola, chocolate, a comfy chair and some patience. You'll need it. But...your store will be awesome when it's done and is well worth the effort.
