are they same customer number and invoice number? is it consistently the same number of orders? is it the same merchandise and QTY?
if not, the gateway might be troublesome for folks and it's also reporting back to cart when it's an error, so it gets logged but not completed... highly unlikely but who knows at this point. If LinkPoint has changed their gateway again, this could be a problem, but i do not have a way to test this, so i'd need to see what yer getting back results wise.
You might want to put your linkpoint account on test mode (if it has one at their end - not the cart side) and see if you can duplicate such behavior.
