New question about data file

Post New question about data file
Scott,

You have been responding to rbalthrope about removing a catagory on our new site. Robert and I are working together on the site of which I do the server stuff. The issue at hand is a catagory that says it has one product that is really not there when we try to remove the catagory.

In short you've directed Robert to pull up the datafile and manually remove the entry there. I've downloaded the file to my local pc using FTP. Problem is, it's a datafile that has a bunch of entries that could take forever to find the listing (transmissions).

Is there an application I can use to open this file that would make it easier to find the above entry?

Thanks

Gary

Gary,
You could use a program called CSVed.
Then you might be able to find the line that is basically empty...
But you should be able to spot the empty line with any text editor,
like EditPad Lite, that you can see the line numbers.
Each product is on its own line.
If you see a line with a bunch of pipes and not much data, that would probably be the line.
It was probably created because a hard return was used in the product's
description when adding the product to the database.

Post Actually Scott,
I was able to open the file with notepad but it doesn't offer the option to list the file in what I would call line mode. I used the search feature and found the lines with the word Transmission as aposed to transmission without the capital T.
I deleted the word Tansmission (with the capital T) then saved it back to the server. I renamed the original datafile first so I wouldn't over write it but it didn't make a difference when I reloaded the site. I think I'll just dump all entries that refer to transmissions and see where that gets me.

I only have a few items listed so it won't hurt so bad if I loss the data, but then again I do have the original file.

I'll let you know what happens....again, thanks for your help.

EditPad Lite does have the capability to display the file with line numbers and it is free.
http://www.editpadlite.com/

You would need to eliminate more than just a single word, you'd have to delete the entire line.
Each line in the database represents a single product.

Post I'll try it,
but in the meantime I screwed the whole thing up. After clearing all the transmission entries the store would not work. I re-loaded the original file and now I get this:

%%head_info%% %%StoreHeader%%

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We're sorry, an error has occured.
Please hit the browser back button, change what was done in error, and try again.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

%%StoreFooter%%

How bad have I screwed this one up??????

What's the store URL?
Try clearing the cookies in your browser... close the browser, re-open the browser,
and try again.

Oh, did you make sure that you uploaded and downloaded the file in ASCII mode?

Post Scott,
Here's the url:
http://www.allperformanceproducts.com/store52/store52/agora.cgi

I took a few minutes last night to look at the data file and see that I'll need to spend more time on it, the file is HUGE!!.

To make my search easier I'm going to remove all the transmission products because the wording comes up about a gazillian times in the file. Ha

I've also noticed that we now have extra spaces in the menu between catagories.

You have to look for empty lines and remove all empty lines....
Take a look at the 2nd line in your database... That is the problem line...
See how it starts with a pipe? That should never be...
Delete that entire line.
Also, line #126 has a space at the beginning of the line. The space must be removed.

Take care of those 2 things and see how it goes.
