Post What does it mean to 'serve images'. Do I want to do this?
I'm converting from a static agoracart now to a database and I'm being asked this question ... (see below) but I don't understand yet 'if' I do or don't want to. In what circumstances would I NOT want Agoracart to serve images? What is the simplest thing to do here ... I can (with FTP) put the images anywhere in my website. THere will be 2 types - thumbnails and bigger.

Please enter the full URL of your /images directory.

The default is "html/images" and if you plan on letting AgoraCart 'serve' your images as needed, then leave this as-is and also make sure Do you want to self-serve the images? is set to "Yes." If you want access to your picture files and they are not accessable under /cgi-bin or the default directory AgoraCart uses, then change the path and set Do you want..." to "No." Read "self-serve" as letting AgoraCart serve the images through it's "picserve" function. If, for example, you put your image files under /images in the root of your server, then change the path to /images and set" Do you want..." to "No."

Many thanks in advance for your help
Liz

Liz,
Simple rule on this...
If you are running the cart from within the cgi-bin, then you want to set this to "YES", if you are running Agora from a directory that is not in the cgi-bin, then set it to "NO".

This just tells the cart to either use picserve.cgi to serve up the images (which you want to do if your cart is in the cgi-bin) or to just use the URL to images set in the manager (which is what you want to do if the cart is NOT in the cgi-bin).

HTH!
