LOL
You never know how bad it can get. It can spread like a rash.
I know one of my other hosts had a bunch of security updates and screwed everything up with one of my forum sites. They had to do a pile of patches to repair the lag issue with them.
As far as the host I use for my Agoracart, they haven't done anything drastic in the past several months. The odd little security updates here and there.

hmmm that gives me an idea. my dog sleeps all the time... a few cookies and a hamburger and he's a pleased pooch. can't get any cheaper than that.
someone invented canned dehydrated water so maybe i can, can sleep. do i hear another pet rock craze?
well, i had the same issue on a server that was set up to accomodate agoracart specifically. also, it doesn't happen to everyone. it could possibly be the server... maybe handles file formats wrong and a manager file was formatted incorrectly, for example. who knows. i think the issue will eventually be brought back to the code to accommodate server handling or find the mistyped character or whatever it is.
the fact that it isn't universal makes it just crazy to try and troubleshoot.

My host also offers Agoracart, but they suck. They won't offer any support.
They told me to come here and swear it's not on their end.
They too requested access to my admin area to create the problem and felt it wasn't anything with them.

Most web hosts do not support the programs that are included with the cpanel and they are correct in sending you here. However, most hosts to deny any cuplability in any problem that is occuring on their servers. They like to "pass the buck".
Still, we are not sure what is really causing the "lag". It may be something with the server, it may be something in the AgoraCart code, it may be that a file was not uploaded in the correct format... Like Dan had said, because this doesn't occur with everyone it makes it really hard to try and troubleshoot.

i have found that auto installed updates and fresh installs at one time used to include file(s) that were in an improper format. when i downloaded the file and edited it (just adding a new blank like... AFTER THE SHEBANG!) then saved and reuploaded it fixed the problem. so that is not user nor server caused. however, that's just an example that may have some weight. it maybe something as simple as a space impropely palced in a string or an illegal character someplace. or even failing to close a loop properly. who knows. surely not me ... don't call me shirley
in this case i'm very certain it is not the server or user even though it worked for several months but now it doesn't. why am i certain? because it happened to me! and happened to me on a server where perl is king. not to mention the fact that the server is owned and maintained by the holy one himself

don't be too hard on your hosting on this or agoracart matters. they can't know everything.
they probably wanted access to your manager to recreate the problem to confirm and to look at error logs to see what's triggered. this problem does not trigger any error that i have seen. it just times out like the confirm and check updates have been made to the dB script fails to follow through. so no error at all. stuff gets written to the dB but the transistion times out.
nothing i'm aware of that a sever setting will fix. so not their problem.

 Product Edit lag on submit
I just wanted to pipe in and say that this "lag" has happened to me twice. After the first occurrence (as indicated further up in this thread) I reinstalled Agora v.5 - and the problem disappeared. Then when using the Product Edit screen for a series of "rapid edits" (just adding some html tags to the product descriptions in about 7 products) - the lag issue reappeared. The issue appeared for me previously when I was going through a 'rapid' succession of deletes (using the Product Delete screen to delete the 'sample' products that are shipped with v.5 from the data.file db.
I too don't believe that I have any special characters in my data.file - in my case I had only ever edited the file using the interactive screens and did not do any downloads (then edits to the downloaded file) and uploads.
I suspect a 3rd install will 'fix' the problem - but not prevent it from re-occurring. This is the least attractive option for me as I don't want to go through the series of reconfig steps to redo my shopping cart settings.
Nothing appears to be logging to my error log. In my case - my host hasn't told me about any hard hits against the server. Very confusing (read a challenge) as to why this seems to crop up after a quick succession of submits (either product deletes or product edits).
'Product Add' still works fine - but both 'Product Delete' and 'Product Edit' stall out!

I am also having the same problem. Using v.5 I don't know if others are experiencing this but customers making a purchase clicking the buy now button also have the delay. I have 3 Agora Carts and all have the same problem on the same server (not shared server) Check the db and everything is fine. Looks like this problem may become more prevalent over the next few days.
Don't want to do re-installs as obviously the problem will re-appear soon again.

harvard,
What's the URL to your store???
Your issue may be different as it is on the cart side and not the manager side.
The manager runs separately from the store.

HI Bonnie
I have it occuring on the manager side as well. Have a look at these two sites:
www.overthetop.co.nz/go2/ and www.intimatemoments.co.nz/go2/
CAUTION: last url is an adult themed site but no porn of any kind.

Harvard,
Your productPage.inc file may have something to do with it...
I am seeing the following line:
Code:<td colspan="3"><hr/</td>
The <hr> tag is malformed...
It is present on both stores...

Hi Bonnie
Thank you so much for that. I have closed the offending tag. Unfortunately the problem is still there.
Looking around all the files for the unusual I found the shipping_dimensions.file inside the data_files folder has balooned to 15 megabytes! We are not yet a live store and have no sales. Should that be 15MB? Appreciate your help very much.

rename that file and see what happens. if it breaks the cart then name it back. no 15 megs is not normal. this file, i think, should be used only with the pro xml addon. so curious why it's being written to.
hey breck680228 check your file. see what the file size is and see if the store breaks after renaming. if it doesn't break does edit products work again?

Hello Dan
Thanks for your reply.
Well, the plot thickens! I renamed the shipping_dimensions.file and the slow problem disappeared.
However, it introduced new problems in that if you select more than 1 unit of any product the following message comes up.
%%head_info%% %%StoreHeader%%
We're sorry, an error has occured.
Please hit the browser back button, change what was done in error, and try again.
%%StoreFooter%%
This does not make sense to me. Both carts were brand new installs using FTP5.cgi and I have only changed the cosmetics of the site and used the Art.inc as the productPage.inc It will be interesting to see if breck680228 gets the same result.

well that's what you call breaking the cart. make a backup of the file then delete the contents. rename back to original file name. the store should work now and fast. you may want to post a few lines of the contents of the file. meanwhile i'll investigate my test sites and client's carts to see what's going on

LOL i found a prostore (all current updates and recent new install) with the shipping_dimensions.file in the data_files folder. this does not have the xml shipping addon installed. the file size is 1,383k so silly me i downloaded it and opened it. weeelllll. the first line is...
00239||||||||
followed but hundreds of blank lines.oops i stand corrected. activating line numbers ineditpad lite the next line with content is numbered 1,415,137 holy cow! the only content dispayed (and there are only several instances)...
line 00000001 - 00239||||||||
line 1,415,137 - 00121||||||||
line 1,415,153 - 00339||||||||
line 1,415,157 - 00340||||||||
line 1,415,159 - 00341||||||||
last empty line number is 1,415,160.
there are no characters or white space or any contents of any kind on any other line. just blank lines.
i think it would be safe to say that this is an unentended anomaly.
i need to point out that this particular store does not have edit product screen problems. i'm not sure if it could be related or not. but could be. if the manager writes to this file and it loops constantly due to a bug then when the file gets too big for resources or the manager cannot write only open because there's noting to write, the manager could experience hanging up on submit. this may explain why the dB is being written to but the manager does not refresh the page. just speculating.
nice catch harvard. this is definately what is commonly known as a bug.

another observation is this store has the 20 userfield addon so the pipes represented in the shipping_dimensions.file are either truncated or stop at a shipping field or an assigned userfield. not sure why all the pipes are not listed.

ok i downloaded the file and backed it up just in case. i used "select all" then deleted the file contents. saved then uploaded to the server. i checked the forntend and experienced no problems adding to cart then proceeding to step one of checkout. i logged into the store manager then edited a product with no delys.. mind you this store did not have a product edit problem to begin with.
so it apprears that clearing the file contents will not harm the store. i haven't fully tested! so be sure to backup the offending file before uploading a zero byte file.
if necessary or easier i don't see whay you can't make a ne txt file in notepad with no contents then rename to shipping_dimensions.file then uploading overwriting the existing file. this way you do not have to open the file. notepad wont open and word and wordpad is not a good choice. you really need a 32 bit plain text editor like editpad or editpad lite to view such a large file.

Hey... speaking of the shipping_dimensions.file... I'm wondering...
Did you turn off the "Enable Dimensions in Product Database?" in the Shipping Settings manager???

usps was enabled by owner but i just disabled it. there were no zip codes defined and no product weights and api was turned off. the only other thing in the api section that was enabled was a few shipping methods ups and usps so i could get the shipping script.

In v5.0, there isn't a setting, just in the pro 5.1 store ...
The shipping_dimensions.file should be completely empty in a v5.0 store...
As a reminder, if you are editing this file, make sure that the empty file is saved in ANSI format, plain text... and upload the file in ASCII mode.

Thanks Dan and Bonnie
I have v5 Standard not Pro. Looked at the inards of shipping_dimensions.file and it had about 30 items listed in there along with 7 million empty lines! Am going to look at the settings in the shipping manager to make sure that dimensions are turned off.
